As Surrey Property Finders we love sharing our top tips and local knowledge of the area. As we embrace Autumn and all things cosy, we thought it might be useful to share some of our favourite Autumn/Winter events and experiences.
It has to be Ripley! The Ripley bonfire is one of the best supported bonfires in the South East, attracting up to 12,000 people. There is a procession that leads through the village, a huge bonfire, and Bensons's funfair with attractions for all to enjoy. The fireworks are spectacular, and the live music just tops off the evening! Be prepared though - it is a popular event and does get busy Ripley Bonfire, 26th October 2024
This is a hard one to choose as so many of the local villages across Surrey run their own incredible displays, ranging from the smaller, more low-key events to the large scale fireworks nights. As well as Ripley above, one of our favorites is Cranleigh (conveniently falling the weekend after the Ripley Bonfire, so you can enjoy both!) - Helen has memories of this event from when she was a young child! The fireworks are just spectacular, very often being let off in time to dramatic music!
Superb food and a fantastic base for a walk in the countryside, we put The Gomshall Mill as #1 Best Village Pub. Located in the pretty village of Gomshall, this 11th century mill was a working corn mill until 1952. Re-opened by new owners in 2022, the pub and restaurant is going from strength to strength, winning the Pub of the year Award (Gold) in December 2023. Plenty of festive events taking place this winter too - including Christmas themed pub quizzes and even Carol Singing!
We really are spoilt for pick your own venues in Surrey, but two of our favourites are Secrettsin Milford who run their Pumpkin week every year, which is great fun! Garsons Farm in Esher Garsons also has an excellent pick your own site- and you can even combine this with a visit to their garden centre, restaurant and farm shop.
Guildford High Street is always spectacular, especially if you stand at the bottom of the High Street and look up! But one of the best, which has really grown over the last few years, is RHS Wisley, which puts on a spectacular display, lighting up their grounds and trees. The grand finale is often located around the lake or in front of the house, but we won't spoil any surprises...! RHS Wisley Glow
We have mentioned in a previous blog that we really do love to shop local to support the smaller businesses in our county. The Packhouse in Farnham is such a unique shopping experience - we love a pre-Christmas trip here. As well as beautifully festive displays, the 60 small independent businesses each offer their own style - but beware, it's easy to lose track of time in here! Similarly, Artichoke Interior Designs in West Horsley is such a lovely little hidden gem, the homeware here is unique and timeless. Their evening Christmas shopping event always marks the start of Christmas for us!
